Tyonek is a census-designated place in Kenai Peninsula Borough located on the northwest side of Cook Inlet, across from the Kenai Peninsula. The name Qaggeyshlat comes from the Dena'ina language and means "little place between toes." As of the 2020 census, the population was 152, down from 171 in 2010.
The area has a long history of human settlement. A Dena'ina Alaska Native village at Tyonek was noted by explorer James Cook in 1778. During the Russian colonial period, the Lebedev-Lastochkin Company maintained a small fur trading station there. In 1794, a detachment of the Vancouver Expedition under Joseph Whidbey visited the trading post and documented a large Russian residence housing nineteen Russians. The community faced a devastating smallpox epidemic in the late 1830s that killed about half the population. During the Resurrection Creek gold rush of the 1880s, Tyonek became a major port, but its importance declined after Anchorage was founded across Cook Inlet in 1915.
The village experienced significant geographical change in the 1930s when flooding of the original settlement prompted residents to relocate seven miles northeast to higher ground. Beginning with the 1940 census, population figures reflected the new location. In 1973, the community formed the Tyonek Native Corporation under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Today, the village features an airstrip in its northeast section and remains a federally recognized Alaska Native community.
