Upper Arlington is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, situated on the northwest side of the Columbus metropolitan area. Today it is home to approximately 36,800 residents. The city's story begins long before its modern founding, with evidence of habitation by the Adena people, followed centuries later by the Wyandot, who were eventually expelled when the U.S. Government distributed land grants to Revolutionary War soldiers. Throughout the 1800s, the land served as farm property for various families.
The Upper Arlington we know today was founded by brothers and real estate developers King and Ben Thompson, who purchased 840 acres south of present-day Lane Avenue from James T. Miller in 1913. They developed the area according to a Garden City-inspired plan created by landscape architect William Pitkin, Jr., initially calling it the "Country Club District." By 1917, the name Upper Arlington had taken hold, referencing its proximity to the neighboring community of Arlington, now known as Marble Cliff.
Development was temporarily interrupted in 1916 when the National Guard established Camp Willis, a training camp for servicemen who were later dispatched to the Mexican border. The camp was dismantled by September 1916. Upper Arlington officially incorporated as a village on March 20, 1918, with a population of 200, and became a city on February 8, 1941. As the population grew, the city annexed surrounding land, with major expansions occurring in the 1950s. The Old Arlington neighborhood, representing the city's historic core, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
