The area's human history stretches back millennia. In 1915, parts of a human skeleton were discovered north of Vero alongside Pleistocene animal remains, a controversial find later validated through archaeological work conducted from 2014 to 2016 by universities including Mercyhurst and Florida Atlantic University. European history arrived dramatically in 1715 when a Spanish treasure fleet wrecked offshore during a hurricane, with eleven of twelve ships carrying tonnes of silver foundering and subsequently attracting pirates who plundered the riches.
More recent development began in 1870 when Captain Allen W. Estes settled the area, officially establishing the first land patent in 1872. The town was chartered on June 10, 1919, with just 71 residents. On May 19, 1925, Vero became the county seat of the newly-formed Indian River County and was officially renamed "Vero Beach." Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway had already begun operating through the area in 1893, establishing early transportation connections. During World War II, the U.S. Navy selected 1,500 acres surrounding the municipal airport for Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base. The city's modern economy centers on tourism, citrus, and Piper Aircraft, which relocated major operations to Vero Beach in 1961 and remains the county's largest private employer.
