Before European settlement in the seventeenth century, the region was inhabited by three Native American tribes: the Nipmuc, Wampanoag, and Narragansett. English theologian Roger Williams purchased the area in 1661. The name Woonsocket likely derives from Native American geographic terms, possibly meaning "fox country" or "at the fork of the river," though another theory credits nearby Woonsocket Hill in North Smithfield.
Woonsocket Falls Village emerged in the 1820s and flourished during the Industrial Revolution. The Blackstone River's abundant water power made the region ideal for textile mills, and Edward Harris built his first mill there in 1831. The town of Woonsocket was officially established in 1867 from three villages in Cumberland, expanded in 1871 with additions from Smithfield, and incorporated as a city in 1888.
Industrial growth attracted waves of immigrants, particularly French-Canadians and Québécois. By 1913, Woonsocket held the sixth-largest French or French-Canadian foreign population in the country. At the height of this immigration, French-Canadians comprised 75 percent of the population. During the Great Depression, the textile industry nearly ceased, but revived during World War II when the city became a major fabric manufacturing center for military uniforms. Beginning in 1979, Woonsocket has sponsored Autumnfest, an annual cultural festival held Columbus Day weekend that draws thousands of visitors.
