Amboy is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, nestled in California's Mojave Desert between Ludlow and Needles along historic Route 66, roughly sixty miles northeast of Twentynine Palms. By 1940, the population had grown to sixty-five people, sustained by both Route 66 travelers and freight traffic on the Santa Fe Railroad running between Kingman, Arizona and Barstow, California. Even during the Great Depression and World War II, when national tourism declined, the town remained busy serving the needs of remaining travelers seeking meals, lodging, and gasoline.
Amboy's prosperity ended when Interstate 40 opened in 1973, bypassing the town entirely. The community declined steadily thereafter.
