Annapolis is an unincorporated community in northern Sonoma County, California, situated about five miles north-northeast of Stewarts Point near the coastline. Once known as Monti, the area was renamed after Annapolis Orchards, which was established in the 1880s. The community's roots as a settled area began in the early 1870s when San Francisco developer J.C. Beatty cleared approximately twelve hundred acres of redwood forest for resale. In 1882, the Wetmore Brothers Commission Merchants, a San Francisco-based business, purchased part of Beatty's land and developed a commercial orchard, naming it after their homeland in Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. The orchard became known for producing popular apple varieties including Gravenstein and Baldwin apples, both fresh and dried. The area's first post office, called Monti, operated briefly between 1884 and 1888. In 1901, Wetmore Brothers worked with local fruit grower George Batt to open the Annapolis Post Office, which operated until 2011. Redwood logging and milling served as primary industries alongside fruit cultivation for many years. Today, Annapolis is part of the Sonoma Coast AVA and has become known for pinot noir production, with many wineries developing on former orchard lands. The community, with approximately four hundred and one residents as of 2010, is home to the Starcross Monastic Community and hosts the historic Horicon Schoolhouse, maintained by the Annapolis Historical Society since 1980.
