Windsor is an incorporated town in Sonoma County, California, located nine miles north of Santa Rosa and sixty-three miles north of San Francisco. The site was originally inhabited by the Southern Pomo people, who called the area Tsoliikawai, meaning "blackbird field." European settlement began in 1851, and in 1855 a post office was established with Hiram Lewis, a Pony Express rider, as the first postmaster. Lewis named the town Windsor because the landscape reminded him of the grounds around Windsor Castle in his native England. The town grew quickly, and by 1856 it had established a diverse business district. The arrival of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad in 1872 strengthened Windsor's connection to the Bay Area. The town faced significant challenges in the early twentieth century, including a devastating fire in 1905 and damage from the Great San Francisco Earthquake. During World War II, a United States Army Air Forces training air base was built in southern Windsor, and a German prisoner of war camp operated west of downtown. The town experienced dramatic growth in the 1980s as urban sprawl expanded north from Santa Rosa, leading to Windsor's incorporation on July 1, 1992. Since then, downtown redevelopment around the former train station has created a walkable village with New Urbanist design principles, including the Town Green park that opened in 2001. As of the 2020 census, Windsor had a population of 26,344.
