Anniston, the county seat of Calhoun County, sits on the slope of Blue Mountain in Alabama. Named "The Model City" by Atlanta newspaperman Henry W. Grady for its careful planning in the late nineteenth century, Anniston grew from humble beginnings. The first white settlers, James Jefferson Teague and Martha Golden, arrived in 1828 near what became Woodstock spring. Following the Civil War, the Woodstock Iron Company was organized by Samuel Noble and Union General Daniel Tyler in 1872, establishing a furnace on the same grounds where the Confederacy had operated one before its destruction in 1865. Anniston was chartered as a city in 1879 and opened to the public in 1883, its name combining Daniel's daughter-in-law Annie with "-ton" for iron ore. Though rooted in iron, steel, and clay pipe industries, the city was promoted as a health resort with hotels and schools, including the Noble Institute for girls established in 1886 and Alabama Presbyterian College for Men founded in 1905. In 1882, Anniston became the first city in Alabama to be lit by electricity. The city's growth was aided by careful planning and excellent rail access, making it Alabama's fifth largest city by 1941. The city's population as of the 2020 census was 21,564. Anniston holds significant place in American history as the site of the 1961 Freedom Riders bus attack and subsequent civil rights struggles that tested the city's commitment to integration.
