Applegate is an unincorporated community in Placer County, California, situated 7.25 miles south-southwest of Colfax and 9.3 miles northeast of Auburn at an elevation of 2,005 feet. The community was originally settled in 1849 by Lisbon Applegate, who arrived from Missouri with his son, George, and established a fruit ranch on acreage above Clipper Gap. The main house of the Applegate Ranch stood where Oliver's gas station and bar is located today. Though Lisbon eventually returned to Missouri, George W. Applegate remained and became deeply rooted in the community.
As the settlement grew, it was initially called Bear River House due to its proximity to the Bear River, located a short distance to the northwest. When a post office was established in 1855, the community officially became known as Lisbon to honor its founder, with George W. Applegate serving as postmaster. In the 1870s, the town was renamed Applegate, also in honor of its founder. The community later became a station on the Central Pacific Railroad, which later became the Southern Pacific. When a second track was added in 1929, the eastbound station was named East Applegate, with the two tracks separated by approximately a quarter mile.
