Loomis is an incorporated town in Placer County, California, located within the Sacramento metropolitan area. With a 2020 census population of 6,836, it shares borders with the city of Rocklin and the Census-Designated Places of Penryn and Granite Bay.
The town's name reflects its colorful past. Originally called Pine, then Pino, Smithville, and Placer, it received its current name in 1890 when the Southern Pacific Railroad chose Loomis to avoid confusion with the Nevada town of Reno. The name honors James Loomis, one of the town's pioneers who served simultaneously as saloon keeper, railroad agent, express agent, and postmaster. Smithville, an earlier name, honored L.G. Smith, a prominent local leader. The Placer post office had opened on the site in 1861, changing names along with the community.
During the early twentieth century, Loomis thrived as the second largest fruit-shipping station in Placer County, reflecting the agricultural importance of the region. The town remained unincorporated until December 17, 1984, when residents voted to incorporate and preserve local control. This decision was driven partly by the threat of annexation by neighboring Rocklin and a determination to maintain the town's small-town character and historic structures, particularly the High Hand and Blue Goose fruit packing sheds located between Taylor Road and the Union Pacific railroad tracks.
