Roseville is the most populous city in Placer County, California, and the third-largest city in the Sacramento metropolitan area, with a population of 147,773 at the 2020 census. The city is crossed by Interstate 80 and bordered by State Route 65.
Before European settlement, the Nisenan people inhabited this land for over two thousand years until they were forcibly removed by disease, miners, and settlers. The modern city developed around a stagecoach station called Griders. In 1864, the Central Pacific Railroad built tracks northeastward from Sacramento as part of the transcontinental railroad. The junction where these tracks met the California Central Railroad line became known as Roseville, and the town incorporated in 1909, three years after the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its facilities here from Rocklin.
Roseville flourished as a railroad town throughout much of the twentieth century. By 1929, the railroad employed approximately 1,225 of the city's 6,425 residents. The post-World War II era brought continued growth, but the rise of the Interstate Highway System, trucking, and commercial airlines gradually reduced railroad traffic. The completion of Interstate 80 in 1956 shifted commercial activity away from historic downtown toward East Roseville.
The city experienced modest growth until 1985, when the arrival of major technology employers like Hewlett Packard and NEC accelerated expansion. Between 1985 and 2000, the population nearly tripled. Beginning in 1988, Roseville invested in a multi-million-dollar downtown revitalization plan that included streetscape improvements, a new civic center, and historic preservation projects.
