Rocklin, located about 22 miles northeast of Sacramento in Placer County, has grown into a vibrant community of over 71,000 residents as of the 2020 census. The city's origins trace back to the California Gold Rush, when the Nisenan Maidu inhabited the area along its rivers and streams before being displaced by mining operations. During the 1850s, miners worked Secret Ravine and surrounding waterways, and the granite quarried from this region later became the base course for the California Capitol Building, with some stone also used for Fort Mason in San Francisco beginning in 1855.
Rocklin's identity became inextricably linked with the railroad. In 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act granted the Central Pacific Railroad land near Secret Ravine, and by 1864 the railroad extended its tracks to the area, establishing it as a refueling and water stop. The Central Pacific named the location Rocklin after its granite quarry and constructed a roundhouse in 1867. When the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, traffic through the town surged significantly. The 1870 census recorded 542 residents, many of them Irish immigrants who had shifted from mining to railroad work. In 1908, the Central Pacific relocated its facility to Roseville, which offered more expansion space.
Beyond railroad workers, Rocklin attracted diverse immigrant communities. Chinese railroad workers settled there in 1869 before being violently driven out in 1876. Finnish immigrants began arriving in the 1870s, while Spanish settlers from Hawaii came in the early twentieth century. The town officially incorporated in 1893.
