Banning is a city in Riverside County, California, located in the San Gorgonio Pass about eighty miles east of Los Angeles and thirty miles west of Palm Springs. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 29,505. The city takes its name from Phineas Banning, a stagecoach line owner known as the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles," who pastured sheep in the pass and operated a stagecoach through the area.
Before becoming Banning, the settlement was initially called Moore City, named after Ransom B. Moore, who operated a large cattle ranch there in the early 1860s. The town was officially incorporated on February 6, 1913. The area's development coincided with the Colorado River Gold Rush, and the Bradshaw Trail, established in 1862, passed through as a wagon road to Arizona mining towns. The railroad arrived in 1876, significantly contributing to the region's growth. In the early twentieth century, Banning became known as the oldest almond growing district in southern California.
The region's indigenous history is significant. The Cahuilla people inhabited the area, and the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel established Rancho San Gorgonio in the pass in 1824. The St. Boniface Indian Industrial School opened in 1890, providing vocational education to Cahuilla and other tribes until its demolition in 1974. During World War II, Banning hosted a 1,000-bed general hospital supporting the Desert Training Center and later serving as a naval convalescent hospital. At approximately 2,300 feet elevation, Banning enjoys a cooler climate than surrounding areas, with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate.
