Moreno Valley is a city in Riverside County, California, and the second-largest city in the county by population. At the 2020 census, the city had 208,634 residents, making it a significant population center within the Inland Empire and part of both the Riverside-San Bernardino and greater Los Angeles metropolitan areas. The city derives its name from the small community of Moreno, founded in 1882 by Frank E. Brown, who declined to have the town named after himself. Instead, it was named Moreno, the Spanish word for brown, in his honor.
The Moreno Valley area has a long history of human habitation stretching back 2,300 years. Archaeological evidence shows at least 200 prehistoric sites within the city, many of them milling stations where Native Americans processed chaparral seeds. Spanish scouts encountered descendants of the Shoshone and Luiseño tribes in the area and blazed several trails, including the Anza Trail. Following California's admission to the United States in 1850, American settlers arrived, and farmers began occupying the region using water supplied by Frank E. Brown's Bear Valley Land and Water Company. However, a lawsuit by the city of Redlands in 1899 over water rights to Bear Valley forced most inhabitants to leave. The area remained relatively quiet until the late twentieth century, when population growth and state economic development prompted incorporation efforts. On December 3, 1984, the communities of Edgemont, Sunnymead, and Moreno united to form the city of Moreno Valley, with an initial population of 49,702.
