Barre is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, with a population of 5,530 according to the 2020 census. Located on the ancestral homeland of the Nipmuc people, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1720 as the Northwest District of Rutland. The town was incorporated as Hutchinson on June 17, 1774, named after Thomas Hutchinson, the colonial governor of Massachusetts. However, when Hutchinson resigned in 1774 due to his Tory sympathies, the townspeople's patriotic fervor led the Massachusetts General Assembly to rename the town Barre on November 7, 1776, in honor of Colonel Isaac Barré, an Irish-born member of Parliament who championed American Independence.
Barre's history includes a notable connection to World War II. On April 11, 1943, the town held a civic welcome for Basil Izzi, a local United States Navy Armed Guard who had survived 83 days on a life raft in the Atlantic Ocean after his ship, the Zaandam, was torpedoed. The Barre Gazette later claimed that the welcoming parade in his honor was the longest parade ever recorded in Massachusetts. In 2015, a bridge carrying Massachusetts Route 32 over the Ware River near South Barre was renamed the Seaman 2nd Class Basil D. Izzi Memorial Bridge.
