Nineteenth-century growth came through the development of streetcar routes, which encouraged suburban housing and brought summer visitors to Lake Quinsigamond. As Shrewsbury's industrial base declined due to limited waterpower sites and delayed railroad arrival, its identity shifted toward becoming a Worcester suburb. The town's population doubled between 1915 and 1940.
