Paxton is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, with a population of 5,004 according to the 2020 census. The area was originally home to the Nipmuc tribe before European settlement began in 1749. The town was officially incorporated on February 12, 1765, created from portions of the neighboring towns of Leicester and Rutland in nearly equal parts. Local legend holds that Charles Paxton, marshal of the Admiralty Court, offered the town a church bell if it would take his name, though the gift was never delivered.
The town's earliest architectural landmark is its meeting house, which was voted into construction on April 1, 1765, and raised the following year. The frame of the original structure still stands today on the town common. A bell cast by Paul Revere was famously drawn to Paxton by oxen in the early years of the town's history. In the mid-twentieth century, Paxton was home to a small amusement park called Paxton Navy Yard. The town also played a role in broadcasting history when Asnebumskit Hill hosted the Yankee Network's early FM broadcasting antenna beginning commercial operations in the summer of 1939.
Today, Paxton spans 15.5 square miles and serves as home to Anna Maria College's main campus. The town maintains its own municipal light and water departments, with drinking water sourced primarily from Asnebumskit Pond. The public library, established in 1877, continues to serve the community.
