Big Bend sits on a dramatic bend of the Pit River in northeastern Shasta County, a remote location that has shaped its history in profound ways. For several thousand years before the 19th century, this area was the indigenous homeland of the Madesi tribe, one of nine bands of Pit River Native Americans who spoke the Achomawi language. The Madesi people thrived here, drawing sustenance from acorns, deer, salmon, and other fish abundant in the river and surrounding territory. Their main village, called Mah-dess' Atjwam, sat on the north bank of the Pit River, while smaller villages clustered near the hot springs on the opposite bank.
Big Bend's isolation meant the Madesi were among the last California Native peoples to be displaced. White settlers began arriving in the 1860s, and by the 1890s, a small town was forming around the hot springs. Originally called Elena in 1890, the settlement was renamed Henderson in 1906 before becoming Big Bend in 1922. Early visitors came to soak in the mineral waters, believed to have healing properties. Growth remained modest until the late 1930s, when construction of the Pit Five Hydroelectric Dam brought thousands of workers and sparked a population boom. Once the dam was completed in the late 1940s, however, the population declined steadily. Today Big Bend is a quiet rural community with 79 residents as of the 2020 census, down from 102 a decade earlier.
