Shasta is a census-designated place in Shasta County, California, situated about six miles west of Redding along Highway 299 at an elevation of 843 feet. Today it is home to 1,043 residents as of the 2020 census, a significant decline from the 1,771 counted in 2010. However, Shasta's past tells a far different story. During the 1850s through 1880s, it was the largest settlement in Shasta County and a thriving commercial center. At its peak, Shasta was home to approximately 3,500 residents, served as the county seat, and boasted a prosperous commercial district with mule trains and stagecoaches as vital economic engines. The town's fortunes shifted dramatically in 1873 when the Oregon-bound Central Pacific Railroad branch bypassed Shasta in favor of Redding, initiating a decline into ghost town status. The loss of the county seat to Redding in 1888 further sealed this fate. Today, Shasta State Historic Park preserves the town's Gold Rush heritage through original nineteenth-century brick buildings partially restored along Main Street, including a post office, church, the oldest Masonic lodge in California, and a store. The park sustained damage during the 2018 Carr Fire, which destroyed the elementary school and damaged the brewery and cemetery.
