French Gulch is a small census-designated place in Shasta County, California, with a population of 373 as of the 2020 census, up from 346 in 2010. Founded by French miners in 1849, the town quickly became one of California's major gold-producing areas and an important supply center when it became the terminus of the western branch of the California Trail. On August 14, 2004, the entire town was evacuated due to a forest fire that burned 13,005 acres, destroyed 26 residences and 76 outbuildings, and required 1,345 fire personnel to control. Residents returned home after three days. In 2018, French Gulch was again evacuated due to the Carr Fire, which started from a motor vehicle malfunction. By August 8, the evacuation order was lifted, and many buildings, including the historic hotel, remained standing. These experiences reflect the ongoing relationship between the small mountain community and the natural forces that surround it.
