Casmalia is a small census-designated place in Santa Barbara County, California, located about five miles southwest of Santa Maria and just outside the borders of Vandenberg Air Force Base. The name comes from the Chumash word "Kasma'li," meaning "it is the last." The community, which had a population of 147 at the 2020 census, sits on land that was part of the 1840 Mexican land grant Rancho Casmalia.
The formal town was founded by Antonio Tognazzini in the mid-1890s and was originally named Someo, after the Swiss village from which the Tognazzini family came. When the post office opened, however, the name was changed to Casmalia due to a conflict with another California town. The railroad town quickly grew to more than fifteen hundred people in its early years. During the height of the nearby Casmalia Oil Field, the town served as a red light district for Union Oil Company workers.
The community's population declined dramatically over the following century, shrinking to less than two hundred residents, largely due to the establishment of the Casmalia Resources Hazardous Waste Landfill facility. Beginning operations in 1973, this 252-acre site accepted toxic chemicals including PCBs, motor oil, and pesticides from thousands of businesses, government agencies, and individuals. The facility was closed in 1989 after permit violations and became a federal Superfund site under Environmental Protection Agency oversight beginning in 1992. During its operation, the landfill received 5.6 billion pounds of hazardous waste, leaving significant soil and groundwater contamination that continues to be addressed today.
