Santa Barbara is a coastal city and county seat in Santa Barbara County, California, situated between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean on a south-facing stretch of coastline. Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed through the Santa Barbara Channel in 1542, and in 1602 Sebastián Vizcaíno named the channel and an island after Saint Barbara. Permanent European settlement began in 1782 when Spanish missionaries and soldiers under Felipe de Neve arrived to construct the Presidio and convert indigenous peoples to Catholicism. The Santa Barbara Mission was established on December 4, 1786, as the tenth California Mission founded by Spanish Franciscans. A devastating 1812 earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.1 destroyed much of the town and Mission, though the Mission was rebuilt by 1820 in a grander style that survives today as the best-preserved California Mission. Spanish rule ended in 1822 with Mexican independence.
