Around the late nineteenth century, wealthy tourists from the eastern and midwestern United States discovered Montecito. Its proximity to Santa Barbara provided necessary services while maintaining seclusion, and its Mediterranean climate and nearby hot springs promised comfortable, healthy living. Architect George Washington Smith gained particular recognition for his residences in Montecito and for popularizing the Spanish Colonial Revival style in early twentieth-century America, as did Lutah Maria Riggs, who began as a draftsman in Smith's firm before becoming his partner and eventually establishing her own practice.
