After California became part of the United States in 1848, the valley's rich soil attracted settlers and farmers. By the late nineteenth century, the Santa Maria River Valley had become one of the state's most productive agricultural areas. The town itself began when four settlers built homes near present-day Broadway and Main Street between 1869 and 1874. Originally called Grangerville and then Central City, it was renamed Santa Maria in 1885 to avoid mail confusion with Colorado's Central City. Oil exploration, starting in 1888, transformed the region's economy. Major discoveries followed, including the Orcutt Oil Field in 1902 and others through the early twentieth century. The Santa Maria Valley Oil Field discovery in 1934 spurred further growth, and by 1957 the valley operated 1,775 oil wells producing over 640 million dollars worth of oil. Today, with a population of 109,707 as of the 2020 census, Santa Maria remains notable for its wine industry and signature Santa Maria-style barbecue, while agriculture continues as a key economic component.
