Chelmsford, a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, was incorporated in May 1655 by an act of the Massachusetts General Court and named after Chelmsford, England. Founded by settler-colonizers from the adjacent communities of Woburn and Concord, it was established within the territory of the Pennacook people, who had inhabited the area for thousands of years. The early local economy relied on lumber mills, limestone quarries, and kilns.
During the American Revolution, the Chelmsford militia played an important role at the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Moses Parker, a town leader, was wounded and captured at Bunker Hill, dying from his injuries on July 4, 1775. The 1700s and early 1800s brought significant development, including the construction of the Middlesex Canal and Middlesex Turnpike through town. In the 1820s, the farming community of East Chelmsford was incorporated as Lowell and grew into one of the first large-scale factory towns in America during the Industrial Revolution.
The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw continued growth and innovation. Ralph Waldo Emerson opened a school here in 1825, and in 1901, Chelmsford became the birthplace of the Chelmsford Spring Company, which later produced the well-known Chelmsford Ginger Ale. The town experienced dramatic population growth between 1950 and 1970, spurred by the connection of U.S. Route 3 to Massachusetts Route 128 and subsequent highway extensions. Today, Chelmsford maintains a representative town meeting form of government and was ranked the 28th best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2011.
