Copperopolis is an unincorporated town in Calaveras County, California, situated along State Route 4 and recognized as California Historical Landmark #296. The town grew rapidly during the Civil War as demand for copper surged, with ore shipped to Stockton and San Francisco before traveling around Cape Horn to eastern smelters. A toll road built by Reed through Telegraph City connected Copperopolis to Stockton and positioned the town on the main stage route between Sonora and Sacramento. After the Civil War, operations declined as copper mining and shipping became economically unfeasible, causing population loss. However, a Boston company revived mining in the 1880s, and the town experienced renewed prosperity during both World Wars when copper demand increased again. By the time mining operations ceased in 1946, local mines had produced over 72 million pounds of copper worth more than twelve million dollars. The first post office opened in 1861, and today the town retains four buildings on the National Register of Historic Places as reminders of its industrial past.
