San Andreas, the county seat of Calaveras County, takes its name from the Catholic parish St. Andrew and the Spanish term for the saint. During the California Gold Rush, Mexican gold miners settled the area in 1848, establishing what began as a tent city, complete with a tent church. The town is registered as California Historical Landmark #252 and sits along State Route 49.
The discovery of gold shaped San Andreas's early history and growth. In August 1852, miners found a nugget so substantial it sold to Wells Fargo & Co. for twelve thousand dollars. Though initial placer deposits were soon exhausted, the discovery of gold in an underground river channel in 1853 revitalized the camp and transformed it into a permanent town. The gold extracted here proved so valuable that San Andreas rebuilt completely after destructive fires in 1858 and 1863, and the town's mining success contributed greatly to the Union's efforts during the Civil War. San Andreas became the county seat in 1866 and established its post office in 1854. The area gained notoriety as a reputed rendezvous for outlaw Joaquin Murrieta and served as the trial location for the notorious highwayman Black Bart.
Today, San Andreas has a population of 2,994 according to the 2020 census, up slightly from 2,783 in 2010. Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the community experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The Pioneer Cemetery, established around 1851, remains a few miles outside town as a reminder of the area's mining heritage.
