San Andreas, the county seat of Calaveras County, takes its name from the Catholic parish St. Andrew and the Spanish term for the saint. During the California Gold Rush, Mexican gold miners settled the area in 1848, establishing what began as a tent city, complete with a tent church. San Andreas became the county seat in 1866 and established its post office in 1854. The area gained notoriety as a reputed rendezvous for outlaw Joaquin Murrieta and served as the trial location for the notorious highwayman Black Bart.
Today, San Andreas has a population of 2,994 according to the 2020 census, up slightly from 2,783 in 2010. Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the community experiences a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
