However, Murphys thrived as a merchant center supplying silver mines in Nevada with provisions via Ebbetts Pass. The town also became a tourist destination, drawing visitors to see the giant sequoia trees nearby in what is now Calaveras Big Trees State Park, a draw that continues today.
Modern Murphys reflects this evolution. With a population of 1,995 as of the 2020 census, the main street now features over two dozen wine tasting rooms surrounded by local vineyards.
