Rail Road Flat is a census-designated place in Calaveras County, California, situated at an elevation of 2,600 feet. This historic mining town was established in 1849 and carries an unusual name rooted in its mining heritage. The town was named after the primitive mule-drawn ore cars that were used to transport ore, despite the fact that no actual railroad ever operated here. Originally known as Independence Flat, the settlement became a center of rich placer and quartz mining activity, with the Petticoat Mine serving as its largest producer. The post office was first established in 1857, closed briefly in 1858, and then re-established in 1869. That same year, the Edwin Taylor store was built. The community also served as the site of an Indian council. Water scarcity presented a challenge for mining operations until engineer W.V. Clark constructed a ditch from the Mokelumne River to create the Clark Reservoir on his property, which supplied water to both the mines and the town. The town experienced significant hardship in 1880 when an outbreak of black fever decimated its population. Today, Rail Road Flat is registered as California Historical Landmark number 286. According to the 2020 census, the town has a population of 316 residents spread across its 9.2 square miles.
