Gorman is an unincorporated community in northwestern Los Angeles County, located in Peace Valley south of the Tejon Pass, a historic gateway linking Southern California with the San Joaquin Valley and Northern California. Spanning 1,530 acres where the Sierra Pelona, Tehachapi, and San Emigdio Mountains meet, Gorman sits at the intersection of two of California's largest fault systems: the San Andreas Fault runs directly through the town, while the Garlock Fault intersects nearby. Today, tens of thousands of motorists pass through daily on Interstate 5, which completed its route through the area in the mid-twentieth century.
The community has served as a rest stop for centuries, beginning with the Tataviam village of Kulshra'jek. Spanish and Mexican colonial traders used the El Camino Viejo through the area, followed by the Stockton-Los Angeles Road after 1852. Charles Johnson became the first American settler after 1853, and his widow, Soledad Girado, operated what became known as Rancho la Viuda. A subsequent operator named Reed established Reed's Station in 1858 as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1867 or 1868, James Gorman Sr. purchased the property, and the station became known as Gorman Station. After Gorman's death in 1873, his widow Johanna maintained the operation until her death in 1889. Oscar Ralphs acquired the ranch around 1898; his brother George founded what would become the Ralphs supermarket chain. The Ridge Route through Gorman was paved in 1919, and Standard Oil established California's first gasoline station away from railroad tracks there in 1923.
