Nestled in the foothills of the Greenhorn Mountains about 25 miles north-northeast of Bakersfield, Woody is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kern County, California. The community was named after Sparrell Walter Woody, who homesteaded with his wife at the foot of Blue Mountain in 1862. The discovery of copper near Woody in 1891 by Joseph Weringer sparked a mining boom. Weringer founded the Greenback Mine and constructed the nine-room Weringdale Hotel, leading to a period of growth when the town was known as Weringdale. When quartz gold was found on Blue Mountain in 1894, the population swelled to over a hundred residents. By 1909, when Weringer subdivided the townsite, the community had reverted to the name Woody.
Today, Woody remains a quiet ranch town with a population of 108 as of the 2020 census, having changed little since the mid-1890s. The town maintains essential services including a post office, fire department, elementary school, and community hall where residents gather for events. Just outside town lies California Historical Landmark number 589, the Mountain House Station, which operated as a Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach stop from 1858 to 1861.
