Isleton is a small city in Sacramento County nestled on Andrus Island within the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Founded in 1874 by Josiah Poole, the city grew quickly after Poole constructed a wharf on the Sacramento River. However, the settlement faced repeated flooding in 1878, 1881, 1890, 1907, and 1972, which brought financial hardship and shaped the community's early struggles. Today, Isleton retains much of its historical character through preserved nineteenth-century storefronts along its main street, many displaying distinct Chinese architectural influences. The city is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area and is crossed by California State Route 160 and the historic 1923 Isleton Bridge. As canneries declined over time, population decreased, though recent years have seen some rebound. The 2020 census recorded a population of 794 residents.
