McClellan Airport sits on historically significant ground in the unincorporated area of McClellan Park, six miles northeast of Sacramento's downtown. The facility occupies the former site of McClellan Air Force Base, which operated as a military installation from 1939 to 2000. The base was named in December 1939 after Major Hezekiah McClellan, a pioneer in arctic aeronautical tests who died in a 1936 aircraft crash near Centerville, Ohio. In the 1980s and 1990s, it specialized in overhauling F-111 and A-10 aircraft. The base closed in 2000 and was transferred to Sacramento County as part of its conversion into McClellan Business Park. The airport was purchased by McClellan Business Park in 2017. Today it operates as a public-use facility supporting general aviation, with tenants including CAL FIRE, the Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, and other aviation services. The Aerospace Museum of California occupies a site at the airport's north end, preserving the region's rich aviation heritage.
