After Leidesdorff's death in 1848, the property passed through his mother's hands before Captain Joseph Folsom purchased it and founded the town of Folsom in 1855.
As miners traveled eastward toward the foothills seeking gold, way stations and commercial establishments developed at regular intervals along the routes. Brighton, also called Five Mile Station, hosted three inns and served as the first stop on the Pony Express Route. Routier Station, established in 1871, became known for Joseph Routier's renowned produce quality. The area flourished with vineyards and orchards between the 1850s and 1880s, establishing Rancho Cordova as an important agricultural and transportation hub during California's formative years.
