Keeler, an unincorporated community in Inyo County, sits on the east shore of Owens Lake, 11.5 miles south-southeast of New York Butte. Once known as Hawley, the town was renamed after Julius M. Keeler, the company agent who laid it out in 1880 when the Owens Lake Mining and Milling Company constructed a new mill to process silver ore from the nearby Cerro Gordo Mines. A 300-foot wharf and the steamship Bessie Brady connected Keeler to Cartago across the lake, transporting 700 ingots at a time in three-hour crossings until the ship burned in 1882. The arrival of the Carson and Colorado Railroad's narrow-gauge line in 1883 further boosted the community. Keeler thrived during the mining boom, then experienced renewed growth in the early twentieth century when zinc mining resumed and an aerial cable tramway was built to transport ore from Cerro Gordo. However, declining silver prices in the late nineteenth century and the cessation of all mining by the 1950s marked the beginning of Keeler's decline. Train service ended in 1960, and water exports to Los Angeles beginning in the 1920s eventually dried up Owens Lake, creating alkali dust storms that drove residents away. Though dust remediation efforts in the early twenty-first century improved conditions, few people remain. The 2020 census recorded a population of 71. A California Historical Landmark commemorates the furnace of the Owens Lake Silver Company.
