Tecopa is a small community in the Mojave Desert in southeast Inyo County, California, with a 2020 census population of 120. The area was originally home to the Koso and Chemehuevi Indians before pioneers arrived in the late nineteenth century to support nearby mining operations. Today, Tecopa is best known for its natural hot springs in the northern part of the community.
The region's history stretches back to early overland travel routes. The Old Spanish Trail and later wagon roads passed through the area, connecting travelers to water sources like Willow Creek and Salt Springs. In the late 1800s, brothers William D. and Robert D. Brown discovered lead and silver ore and established a townsite called Brownsville in 1875. Jonas Osborne later bought the property and renamed it after Paiute leader Chief Tecopa. A post office opened in 1877, but the town declined after miners relocated to Resting Springs in 1879. The community was reestablished in 1907 when the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad arrived, bringing renewed activity to the area.
Tecopa experienced significant changes throughout the twentieth century. Low-income retirees began settling in the hot springs zone during the early 1960s. The community developed into distinct areas including the Triangle, the Hot Springs zone with county-run facilities, and Tecopa Heights, which grew from affordable homestead parcels offered beginning in the 1950s. Though the silver and lead mines closed in 1957, the natural hot springs and recreational opportunities have sustained the community as a retirement destination.
