Lone Pine is a census-designated place in Inyo County, California, nestled in the Owens Valley between the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Inyo Mountains to the east, near the Alabama Hills and Mount Whitney. The town takes its name from a solitary pine tree that once stood at the mouth of Lone Pine Canyon. According to the 2020 census, Lone Pine is home to 2,014 residents.
The area has deep roots in the region's past. The Paiute Indians inhabited the Owens Valley from prehistoric times and established trading routes extending to the Pacific Coast. European settlement began in the winter of 1861–62 with a cabin, and a settlement grew over the following two years. The Lone Pine post office opened in 1870. Tragedy struck on March 26, 1872, when a violent earthquake at 2:30 am destroyed most of the town, leaving only twenty of eighty buildings standing and claiming the lives of 26 residents. The earthquake created Diaz Lake and formed the main fault, now commemorated by a mass grave north of town.
During the 1870s, Lone Pine became an important supply center for nearby mining communities. The arrival of the Carson and Colorado Railway in 1883 further boosted the local economy. The town's destiny changed again in 1920 when a movie production company arrived to film The Round-Up in the Alabama Hills. Over the following decades, Lone Pine became a iconic film location, hosting more than 400 films, 100 television episodes, and countless commercials, featuring stars from Tom Mix to Russell Crowe.
