Atascadero, whose name means "mire" or "bog" in Spanish, is a city in San Luis Obispo County located along U.S. Route 101. Edward Gardner Lewis, a magazine publisher from the East who had previously founded a utopian community in Missouri, purchased the Atascadero Ranch in 1912 and officially founded the city in 1913. Lewis envisioned a planned colony for thirty thousand residents and employed experts in agriculture, engineering, and city planning to realize his dream. He constructed an eighteen-mile road through the Santa Lucia Mountains to the ocean and built cottages and a beachfront hotel called the Cloisters at Morro Bay.
The centerpiece of Lewis's vision was an Italian Renaissance-style building completed between 1914 and 1918, now designated California Historical Landmark No. 958. The city was incorporated in 1979 and grew to 29,773 residents by 2020. Atascadero State Hospital was established within the city, and State Routes 41 and 46 provide connections to the Pacific Coast and the Central Valley.
