Halcyon is an unincorporated community of approximately 125 acres located in San Luis Obispo County, just south of Arroyo Grande. Founded in 1903, it began as a Theosophical intentional community and remains home to The Temple of the People, a religious organization established in Syracuse, New York in 1898 by William Dower and Francia LaDue. Both are registered as historical sites at the state and federal levels.
When the Temple relocated to Halcyon in 1903, Dower and LaDue, along with other members from Syracuse, established roots through farming, poultry raising, and handicrafts. Dower, a medical doctor, founded the Halcyon Hotel and Sanatorium, which treated various ailments and remained operational until 1949. The community developed infrastructure including a general store and post office that opened in 1908, as well as a print shop that produced the monthly magazine the Artisan and other Theosophical literature.
Francia LaDue, known officially as "Blue Star," led the Temple as its first Guardian in Chief until her death in 1922. The Blue Star Memorial Temple, designed by architect Theodore Eisen of Los Angeles, was constructed in 1923 in her honor. Notable figures connected to Halcyon included composer Henry Cowell, Irish writer Ella Young, and mystic poet John Varian, whose sons Russell and Sigurd invented the klystron and founded the Varian electronics company.
Today, Halcyon contains fifty-two single-family homes, with thirty owned by the Temple, and just over one hundred residents. The Temple continues its mission as an international theosophical society, holding weekly Sunday services and daily healing services at the Blue Star Memorial Temple.
