Harmony is an unincorporated community in San Luis Obispo County, California, situated on State Route 1 between Cayucos and Cambria near the junction with State Route 46. Founded in 1869 by Swiss immigrants, Harmony began as a dairy settlement centered around several ranches and a creamery. The town earned its name in 1907 when local owners and ranchers, seeking to end feuds that had turned violent, chose the name as a symbol of their truce. The Harmony Valley Dairy Co-op, established in 1901, became the heart of the community, eventually employing ten workers and producing butter and cheese recognized statewide. At its height, the creamery attracted notable visitors, including publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, who stopped often on his way to his home in San Simeon. The creamery closed around 1955 due to rising grazing fees and industry consolidation, causing the town's population to decline until the 1970s, when it was rediscovered by counterculture seekers drawn to rural living and traditional crafts. Historic buildings were restored and reopened as restaurants and shops. Since then, Harmony has experienced cycles of prosperity and neglect. In 2014, Alan VanderHorst and his family purchased the 2.5-acre historic town with plans to restore and preserve it. Today, a small community of artisans maintains Harmony through retail shops selling hand-blown glass, pottery, and art, while Harmony Cellars, a boutique winery opened in 1989, continues to draw visitors to the area.
