Cambria is a coastal town in San Luis Obispo County, California, situated midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles along Highway 1. The town's name, adopted in 1869, comes from the Latin word for Wales, chosen by a Welshman named Llewellyn who operated the Cambria Carpenter Shop. The settlement had previously been known as Slabtown, Rosaville, San Simeon, and Santa Rosa before settling on its current name. Cambria sits amidst Monterey pines in one of only three such native forests in existence.
The area has a deep human history. The Chumash people, who called the location tsɨtkawayu, settled here for centuries, possibly as many as thirty thousand inhabitants over roughly one thousand years before Spanish arrival. They were skilled at harvesting shellfish and seafood, hunting, gathering seeds, and creating crafted implements, baskets, and jewelry from natural materials. The first recorded European visit came in 1769 when the Portola expedition camped near present-day Santa Rosa Creek and spent Christmas in the area.
During the 1860s and 1870s, Cambria experienced a mining boom after cinnabar, an ore used for mercury extraction, was discovered in 1862. The Oceanic Quicksilver Mining Company became the sixth largest mine in the world, employing three hundred workers at its peak. However, falling mercury prices after 1878 ended this prosperity. A devastating fire in 1889 virtually ended mining operations, and Cambria transitioned into a quiet dairy community. At the 2020 census, the town had a population of 5,678.
