The modern town of Santa Margarita was founded in 1889 when the Southern Pacific Railroad reached the area from Templeton on April 20. This arrival sparked remarkable growth, as Santa Margarita became a crucial hub while the railroad was being constructed down the Cuesta Grade. The town boasted hotels, restaurants, taverns, blacksmiths, and other businesses serving freight handlers and travelers. This prosperity continued through the 1920s when the El Camino Real, which became the town's main street, drew visitors traveling through California. However, the completion of the railroad to San Luis Obispo in 1894 and later the bypass of Highway 101 in 1956 quieted the town considerably. Today, Santa Margarita is home to approximately 1,291 residents and has become a quiet artist and family community.
