Berkeley is a city on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California. The area was originally home to the Chochenyo/Huchiun Ohlone people, who left evidence of their presence through rock formations used to grind acorns and seeds, shellmounds, and artifacts discovered throughout the region. When Europeans arrived in 1776 with the De Anza Expedition, Luis Peralta, a soldier at the Spanish Presidio of San Francisco, was granted a vast stretch of land on the east shore of the bay for a ranch called Rancho San Antonio. He eventually divided portions of the ranch among his four sons, including Domingo and Vicente, whose names survive today in Berkeley street names. The Peraltas continued ranching through the Spanish and Mexican eras, but after the Mexican-American War and the gold rush, their lands were rapidly diminished by squatters and legal disputes. In 1853, Alameda County was created from Contra Costa County, and the area that would become Berkeley was part of Oakland Township. The city's transformation came in 1866 when Oakland's College of California relocated north to a site along Strawberry Creek at the foot of the Contra Costa Range. Frederick Billings suggested naming the town after the eighteenth-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley, inspired by lines about westward empire. The College of California collaborated with the State of California to create the public University of California in 1868. As the campus developed, residential areas and commercial settlements grew nearby, with the first post office opening in 1872. Today, Berkeley is home to the oldest University of California campus and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and is known as one of the most socially progressive cities in the United States. The 2020 census recorded a population of 124,321.
