San Leandro, located in Alameda County's East Bay between Oakland and Hayward, is home to nearly 91,000 residents according to the 2020 census. The city's name honors Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop, reflecting its Spanish heritage. European exploration of the area began on March 20, 1772, when Spanish Captain Pedro Fages and Father Crespi arrived. San Leandro became Alameda County's seat in 1856, though the county courthouse was destroyed by the devastating 1868 earthquake on the Hayward Fault, leading to the seat's relocation in 1872. The city developed a significant Portuguese American community starting in the 1880s, when Portuguese laborers from Hawaii and the Azores established farms and businesses. By 1910, they comprised nearly two-thirds of the population. Like many post-World War II suburban cities, San Leandro once had restrictive covenants barring property sales to minorities. In 1960, the city was 99.3 percent white, but demographics shifted dramatically over subsequent decades. By 2010, Asian Americans had become the largest group at approximately one-third of the population. Today, San Leandro reflects the diverse character of the modern East Bay.
