Chualar is an unincorporated community and census-designated place nestled in the Salinas Valley of Monterey County, located ten miles southeast of Salinas at an elevation of 115 feet. The name comes from the Spanish word for "pigweed grove," derived from the indigenous word chualar, referring to an abundant native goosefoot plant that once thrived in the area. According to the 2020 census, Chualar had a population of 1,185 residents living in its compact 0.6 square mile area.
The community's recorded history began in 1871 with the opening of its post office, though the office closed temporarily before reopening in 1874. Chualar was once owned by the Johnson family, who operated a cattle ranch spanning over 15,000 acres. The community is perhaps most remembered for a tragic event in September 1963, when a bus carrying Mexican migrant workers collided with a train at a railroad crossing about one mile south of town, killing 32 passengers and injuring 25. This accident was the most serious road accident in U.S. history and helped prompt the abolition of the bracero guest worker program. In 2013, on the accident's 50th anniversary, the portion of U.S. Route 101 where the collision occurred was designated the Bracero Memorial Highway. More recently, in December 2019, a nearby levee breach caused Highway 101 to shut down and required the evacuation of a nursing home and temporary sheltering of schoolchildren.
