Gonzales is a city in Monterey County, California, located sixteen miles southeast of Salinas in the Salinas Valley. Founded in 1874 by brothers Dr. Mariano Gonzalez and Alfredo Gonzalez on land originally granted to their father, Teodoro Gonzalez, the town was laid out in a grid pattern across approximately fifteen thousand acres. The brothers secured a right-of-way for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1872, establishing the town as a transportation hub, and pioneered one of the first irrigation systems in the valley by constructing a dam and canals on the nearby Salinas River.
Agriculture has defined Gonzales throughout its history. Early commerce centered on grain raising and cattle ranching, but in the early nineteen hundreds, Swiss immigrant John B. Meyenberg transformed the region into a dairy community when his Alpine Milk Company opened its first plant in town in 1906. At its peak, seven thousand cows within five miles of Gonzales supplied the operation. By the nineteen twenties, dairy farming gave way to orchards and row crops, taking advantage of rich soil and advances in irrigation and machinery that made the Salinas Valley the nation's premier agricultural center. Today, only one dairy farm remains near town.
The town was officially incorporated on January tenth, nineteen forty-seven. The population was eight thousand six hundred forty-seven at the twenty twenty census. Gonzales earned recognition beyond agriculture when it won the Culture of Health Prize from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in twenty nineteen.
