San Ardo is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Monterey County, located 18 miles southeast of King City. The town sits at an elevation of 449 feet near the southeastern terminus of the Salinas Valley, where it narrows between the California Coast Ranges, the Santa Lucia Mountains, and the Cholame Hills and Diablo Range. The post office opened in 1886 under the San Bernardo name but changed to San Ardo in 1887 to avoid confusion with San Bernardino, California. San Ardo first appeared as a census-designated place in 2000.
The region features a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with summers that are warm but not hot. The Salinas River flows northward along the community's west side. The local economy centers on agriculture, including farming and ranching, along with servicing the San Ardo Oil Field, located about five miles south of town. The 2020 census reported a population of 392, down from 517 in 2010, with approximately 79 percent of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
