Moss Landing is a small unincorporated community on the Monterey County coast, located eighteen miles north-northeast of Monterey at the mouth of Elkhorn Slough where it flows into Monterey Bay. The area was first inhabited by the Ohlone people, who may have lived there as long ago as four thousand years before being forced into the mission system by Spanish colonizers in the 1700s. After Mexican independence, the government granted vast ranchos to settlers, including the thirty-thousand-acre Rancho Bolsa Nueva y Moro Cojo that encompassed the Moss Landing area.
The community's modern history began in the early 1860s when Texas ship captain Charles Moss established a landing and wharf to serve the emerging grain trade of the Salinas Valley. William B. Post, known for hunting and trading in hides and buckskin, opened one of the first grain warehouses at the location, which became an important shipping point. The town was originally named after Charles Moss and received its post office in 1895, changing the name to Moss Landing in 1917. It developed into a busy whaling and fishing port with fish processing plants and canneries. The twentieth century brought further development: the Moss Landing Harbor District was established in the 1940s, the Power Plant opened in 1950, the Marine Laboratories were founded in 1966, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute relocated there in the mid-1990s. As of the 2020 census, Moss Landing had a population of two hundred thirty-seven residents.
