Davis is the most populous city in Yolo County, located in the Sacramento Valley region of Northern California. The 2020 census counted 66,850 residents, with the University of California, Davis adding over 40,000 students as of 2023, making the city renowned as the biking capital of America.
The land where Davis now stands was historically inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including those of the Clovis culture and later the Patwin, a southern branch of the Wintun people. The post office shortened the name to Davis in 1907, and the city was officially incorporated on March 28, 1917.
From its earliest days as a farming community, Davis has been known for contributions to agricultural science and veterinary care. Following the University Farm Bill of 1905, Governor George Pardee selected Davis from fifty candidate sites as home to the University of California's University Farm, which opened to students in 1908. The farm evolved into the Northern Branch of the College of Agriculture in 1922 and was upgraded to become the seventh UC general campus, University of California, Davis, in 1959.
