Knights Landing is a small census-designated place in Yolo County, California, situated on the Sacramento River about twenty-five miles northwest of Sacramento. Founded in 1843 by Dr. William Knight, a physician from Baltimore, Maryland, the community was originally called Baltimore when it was formally laid out in 1849. The name changed to Knights Landing in 1853 after a dispute over town lot sales prevented the Baltimore name from being retained. The settlement was built on a mound that had served as an ancient meeting place for Native Americans from the Cache Creek and Sacramento River regions.
In its early years, Knights Landing demonstrated importance as a steamboat landing and a vital point of communication between people on either side of the Sacramento River. A ferry operated there, with tolls of one dollar for a man and horse, or five dollars for a team and wagon. The community developed with hotels, including the Yolo House, which opened on New Year's Day 1854, and a general merchandise store established on the Native American mound in 1853. The Knights Landing branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad was completed on March 25, 1890, further boosting the town's prosperity, and a subsequent bridge across the river contributed to continued growth. Today, Knights Landing has a population of 1,117 according to the 2020 census, with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate and an elevation of thirty-six feet.
